Indianapolis Boat, Sport, and Travel Show

Yesterday I went to the Boat Sport and Travel show.  I met a lot of cool people and got some good deals on new lures.  In years past, there has been a fly fishing show alongside the show.  The boat sport and travel show is engineered to sell stuff, whereas the fly show has information and you can meet cool people.  Thus, they got rid of most of the fly fishing related booths and speakers.

The highlight was getting to see Jeff Currier, a legendary fly fishing artist, presenter, and fisherman.   www.jeffcurrier.com
 He has caught over 300 species of fish on the fly!!
I went to see two of Jeff's powerpoint presentations on Yellowstone and Africa.
He also did some sharpie art for me on a fly box.  One of the coolest things ever to watch!!

Fishing coverage should be back up soon.  Temps have been in the 60s for a few days this week.

More Rainy Day Fun

Thanks to our school football team, which won their fifth state title, we got an extra day off of school.  What better way to spend it than to invite friends to go fish?
Let's just say the weather wasn't pretty.  I might be getting some kind of nickname similar to "Monsoon" Currier because the last few times I've gone fishing haven't been pleasant.  Today: 40 degrees and rain.  Not too terrible

I brought my good friends Josh and Bobby fishing.  Bobby was running late, so I set Josh up with a tube jig while I chucked an olive articulated streamer I learned from the local fly shop.  Within about ten minutes, Josh got a decent bass.

I stalked the bank and picked off a nice fish on my streamer.  When it gets this cold and the weather gets this bad, the fish are super sluggish, which means they don't fight hard, but they take forever to bring in because they don't expend much energy during the fight.

After Bobby came, I switched over to my trusty Rapala Shadow Rap and got another nice fish.

On the way back around the pond, a fish grabbed my jerkbait a foot from the bank and let go.  We could all hear its jaws clamp down, but its mouth was so big I failed to hook it.  Like any good fishing friend, Bobby immediately flipped his jig to where I missed the fish and came tight within seconds.

The fish weighed about four and a half pounds, and its one of the best we've seen since the shad came to the pond.  Overall, not a bad day, especially considering we were fishing on a bonus day of thanksgiving break!!

Rainy Day Fun

Charles and I went out last Thursday evening for a little fishing.  We both assumed that the fly fishing wouldn't be good, so we left the fly rods at home.  Instead, we brought the full bass baitcaster outfits. Rain was coming down hard, and we both  had on full rain gear.  I love fishing in the rain for some odd reason, just like I enjoy running while it's raining.  As long as I'm not soaked
With the rain we were getting, spinnerbaits would have been a good option, but we settled on jerkbaits.  I was fishing a Rapala Shadow Rap.  It has quickly become my go-to jerkbait because of its unpredictable movement.  Bass can't seem to stop eating it, and its violent movement and super slow fall have gotten me lots of spring bass, but it seems just as effective year-round.

I was quickly twitching my jerkbait back to the bank when a fish swirled on it three feet from me.  I set the hook and wound up with a nice 4-pounder.

Charles and I continued catching more fish through the rain, and had a great evening catching up with one another.  That's one thing I love about fishing: it has the power to bring friends closer.

New update: Summer is over

Sorry I haven't been updating.  Lots of things are going on.

1. Earlier this summer, my scout troop went on a high adventure trip to the Boundary waters.  Expect a video soon.

2. I've been busy with school related things, but we just got back today.

3. I really haven't been fishing much.  However, I will show you a few older fish I've caught since my last post.

I went smallmouth fishing with my uncle, and we lost a few, but the Rock Bass and Longear Sunfish saved the day.

I've started using the photo editor app Prisma.  It uses artsy filters to really make pictures pop.  Here are some prime examples.

Anyways, I should be back to fishing here and there in the weekends, but for the most part it will be on and off until next summer.  I should update if anything fun happens or if I catch anything interesting.

Slow Bass fishing, More Bluegill Fun

Went out yesterday evening to fish.  Only one nice bass in three hours.  However, I had a little fun with the spawning bluegill.  They are getting a little more wary but are still within 5 feet of the bank.

Insane Fishing day with Bobby and Josh

Sorry I didn't update before now.

Last week I went fishing with Bobby.  I noticed some bluegill beds a few feet from the bank and just like that, we couldn't keep them off the hook.  I would say the minimum size of these guys was about six inches.  It was pretty fun because I couldn't find a fly they wouldn't hit.  Didn't get many pictures of them, but all you need to know is they were plentiful and large.

You know it's gonna be a good day when the bass start patrolling and picking off bluegill.  Some even chased the ones I had hooked!   Somehow in my mind this translated to topwater flies, so I switched over to a Hellboy given to me by Cecil Guidry.  It worked well for a few fish

Unfortunately, I broke it off on a two pounder at the bank.  That was depressing.  We continued fishing for awhile until we learned that Josh, a friend from school, was riding to the pond to meet us.  Bobby tried to teach him bass fishing.  Let's just say that he had to learn to rotate the rod first.  However, after dozens of missed fish, he finally got the hang of it.  You wouldn't believe it, but one of the fish he caught on a plastic worm had my hellboy in its mouth!!!

After a few more nice fish, we went to bluegill fishing to keep interested.  The bass were no longer fired up and it got slightly boring.  Bobby went to work waiting for hours while I slammed bluegill and was rewarded with a decent catfish.

After that, there was some decent evening fly fishing.  I put on a Flyfishfood hambone streamer and missed probably 3 fish on the set.  Then, I connected with an incredible bass!  I fought it for a few minutes and was able to bring it in through the dense weed mat surrounding the pond.  I didn't get a weight, but I measured her against the fly rod.  My estimate is 21 inches.


Overall, the highlight of the day is definitely all the GoPro footage of fish releases we got.  Expect some videos up on my youtube channel soon.
